The Benefits of Connecting with Your Neighbors
Nextdoor is a social networking service for neighborhoods. One of Nextdoor’s greatest strengths is its local focus. You can hear directly from people who live nearby and learn about businesses and resources serving your specific area.
It can be particularly useful for getting local recommendations, learning about community events, sharing information about neighborhood concerns, buying or selling items locally, and spreading the word quickly when a pet goes missing.
But there’s something important to remember: a recommendation on a public forum should be the beginning of your research, not the end of it.
Trust Your Neighbors, But Do Your Homework
Most people participating in neighborhood groups genuinely want to help. Unfortunately, public online communities can also attract people looking to make a quick buck, misrepresent their experience, scam others, or take advantage of someone in a vulnerable situation.
Before hiring any service provider you discover in Nextdoor, whether from an ad or in a post’s comments, take time to independently verify them.
Look for an established business presence, read reviews from multiple sources like Nextdoor, Google, and Yelp, ask questions, and check credentials that are relevant to the service being provided.
When hiring someone to enter your home or yard, care for your pets, or look after your children, consider factors such as professional experience, insurance, bonding, employee screening and vetting, communication procedures, and what happens if your regular provider becomes unavailable.
A neighbor saying, “I know someone who can do it cheap,” isn’t the same thing as knowing that person is qualified, reliable, and worthy of your time.
Be Careful With Neighbor-to-Neighbor Transactions
The same caution applies when buying or selling something through an online community.
Avoid sharing unnecessary personal information, be cautious of unusual payment requests, and use a safe meeting location when appropriate. If something about a transaction feels strange or unnecessarily complicated, there’s nothing wrong with walking away.
Remember that being in the same online neighborhood group doesn’t automatically mean someone is personally known or trustworthy. While Nextdoor and similar online groups try to only allow access to people within a certain geographic location, some might circumvent the rules and have sneaky intentions.
Use Extra Care With Lost and Found Pets
Nextdoor can be incredibly valuable when a dog or cat goes missing. A community sharing sightings and information quickly can make a tremendous difference.
However, lost-pet posts also contain sensitive information.
If you lose your pet, think carefully before publicly sharing details about when your home will be empty, exactly where a pet escaped from, your daily schedule, or other information that could create an unnecessary security risk.
If someone claims to have found your pet, verify before meeting or sending money. Ask for a photo or identifying information that wasn’t included in your public post. Be especially suspicious of anyone demanding payment, sending questionable links, or creating an urgent financial situation before they’ll “return” your pet.
Similarly, beware of “returning” a found pet to someone who may not be the actual owner. Sketchy people may just want that dog, and you could be inadvertently handing someone else’s beloved pet to a dishonest individual if you don’t take proper precautions.
