Caring for pets involves much more than filling a food bowl or letting a dog into the backyard. Pet sitting requires experience, sound judgment, and the ability to recognize and respond to emergencies. Choosing an inexperienced caregiver can put your pets, your home, and even the caregiver themselves at risk. Here are 5 reasons you should never rely on a kid or teen for pet care, whether in Katy, Cypress, Fulshear, West Houston, or beyond.
1. Bites and Scratches Can Cause Serious Injuries
Even the sweetest pets can behave differently when their families are away.
Dogs and cats may become anxious, fearful, protective, or confused, making them more likely to bite or scratch if they feel threatened or startled. Or, a young, inexperienced caregiver can mishandle a pet, causing them to bite or scratch the child or teen in self-defense.
A bite or scratch is not always a minor injury. Cat scratches can lead to serious bacterial infections, while dog and cat bites can damage tendons, nerves, and joints or require extensive medical treatment. Even a seemingly small wound can become infected if not treated promptly.
Cats, in particular, can scratch by mistake when playing rigorously or being pet. These scratches can lead to cat scratch fever (also known as cat scratch disease or CSD), a bacterial infection caused by Bartonella henselae. People usually contract it after being bitten or scratched by an infected cat, especially kittens, or if an infected cat licks an open wound.
Professional pet sitters receive training in reading animal body language, approaching pets appropriately, and reducing the likelihood of defensive or potentially harmful behaviors. Experience matters when working with animals that may be experiencing stress. Sure, pros get bit and scratched, but it’s our problem when that happens, not yours. Keep reading and I’ll explain.
2. You Could Face Liability if Someone Gets Hurt
When I say that a bite or scratch is a professional pet sitter’s problem, not yours, I am referring to the liability involved in a pet-related injury.
The Risk of Dog Bites
Many pet owners don’t realize that if a neighborhood child or teenager is injured while caring for their pets in home, they could face a lawsuit. According to Texas law, if a dog bites anybody, they are subject to the following rules and restrictions:
- The One-Bite Rule: If a dog has no prior history of biting or aggression, the owner may avoid strict liability for a first-time attack. However, if the dog has a documented history of aggression, attempted to bite someone, or the owner is aware of dangerous propensities, strict liability applies. All it takes is a child or teen putting your pet in a situation where he or she feels cornered or unsafe to sustain a bite, which then classifies your dog as a known bite risk.
- Negligence: Even if a dog has no prior history, a victim can seek compensation by proving that the owner was careless (e.g., by failing to secure the dog or by violating local leash laws). Imagine a kid or teen loses control of your dog, he or she bites a member of the community, and that neighbor or community member sues you for negligence in leaving your pet in the hands of an underage caregiver. An inexperienced caregiver could easily lose control of a dog during a walk, allowing the dog to injure another person, another animal, or cause a traffic accident, for which you would be liable as the dog owner.
The Risk of Other Injuries
If the underage caregiver is injured while walking your dog, entering your home, or otherwise performing pet care duties, there could be legal, financial, or insurance implications. Just a tug of a leash can hurt a wrist, a miss of a step can cause an ankle to sprain, and an enthusiastic dog jump can cause a significant fall, even for young people.
We see these injuries regularly in the pet care industry, and, thankfully, we have insurance and workers’ compensation coverage to support us if we need medical attention or lose wages due to a pet care-related incident. Like most professional pet care companies, we are structured with these risks in mind and have established safety protocols designed to reduce the likelihood of accidents. The kid next door will likely not realize that they’ve put themselves at risk until it’s too late, and now you’re potentially responsible for their medical bills and whatever else the child/teen’s family decides they want from you.
3. Your Pets May Not Receive the Care They Truly Need
Pet care is about much more than feeding and potty breaks.
Professional pet sitters observe pets carefully during every visit, watching for changes in appetite, energy level, mobility, behavior, breathing, elimination habits, and overall well-being.
An inexperienced caregiver may not recognize that a dog refusing food, a cat hiding unusually, or a rabbit sitting quietly in the corner could be showing signs of illness or pain.
When pets are left in the hands of someone without experience, subtle medical problems can go unnoticed until they become serious emergencies. Think of a cat with a urinary blockage; the second we see a cat straining at the litter box, which includes a sudden mess of litter on the floor, we are on alert. A child or teen won’t even know urinary blockages are common in cats, especially males, and won’t be able to alert you until your cat is unresponsive or worse.
4. Poor Decisions Can Lead to Lost or Neglected Pets
Children and teenagers are still developing judgment and decision-making skills.
Simple mistakes like leaving a gate open, forgetting to latch a door, walking an overly strong dog without a harness, or accidentally allowing a frightened cat to slip outside can have heartbreaking consequences.
Sometimes visits are unintentionally shortened, delayed, or forgotten altogether because school activities, sports, social plans, or other commitments arise. Or, a whole trip’s worth of visits are canceled because the kids’ or teens’ family made travel plans themselves. We recently had a last-minute request from a new client because their teenage pet sitter cancelled the entire trip three days before their departure. Professional companies like ours would never do that.
