As a professional pet care provider, I frequently hear heartbreaking stories about lost pets. And, sadly, I’ve learned that losing a pet doesn’t just invite worry and sadness; it can also attract scammers hoping to cash in on desperation. Fortunately, although I haven’t personally encountered these scams, I make it a priority to stay up-to-date so I can advise clients and community members when the worst happens. Last week, I shared what to do if your pet is lost or you find a lost pet. Today, we’re discussing how to protect yourself from lost pet scams in West Houston and beyond.
What Scammers Do & Why It Works

Imagine you’ve just posted your missing pet’s photo all over social media, vet offices, and flyers around town. You’re anxious, exhausted, clinging to hope. That’s exactly when scammers strike. They might message claiming to have found your pet, but they’ll refuse to share proof. They just want a quick reward or payment first.
Sometimes, scammers pretend to be from an animal shelter or a pet search service, urgently telling you that your pet needs medical attention, or worse, threatening to euthanize them unless you pay up. It’s cold-hearted and manipulative, and it’s painfully effective on someone desperate to get their furry family members back.
Spotting the Warning Signs
Here are red flags I’ve learned to watch for:
- Demands for payment without showing you the pet: No honest person will insist on receiving money before showing you a recent picture or unique detail about your pet
- Reluctance to meet face-to-face in a public place: Anyone with your actual pet should be glad to let you verify and reunite safely
- Bad grammar, suspicious urgency, and refusal to answer detailed questions: Real shelters and recovery services have procedures, transparency, and respect your need for confirmation before any money changes hands
Please note that the exchange of funds is rare in cases of lost pets. It is possible a shelter may charge you an intake fee because they had to house your pet during its loss, but that would be paid once you go to pick up your pet at their facility.
How to Protect Yourself From Lost Pet Scams in West Houston

- Don’t share too many details on public posts. Ask finders to describe things only someone who’s truly seen your pet would know.
- Ask for a current photo, video, or video call.
- Arrange meetings in public, never alone, and never in private places.
- Never wire money, buy gift cards, or send any payment until your pet is safely returned, and think twice about offering large public rewards (rewards may attract scammers).
- If a caller claims to be from a shelter, ask for their official callback number and verify it independently before proceeding; do not trust the phone ID, as scammers can spoof it to appear as the official number. Dialing the number yourself is key!
- Microchip and tag your pets, then ensure the information is up to date. This not only boosts your odds of a genuine reunion but makes it harder for scammers to fake ownership.
Stick to Reputable Resources in West Houston

I advise everyone: lean on reputable lost pet resources and stay in touch with local shelters and animal control. And, if anything feels off, report it. Reporting helps others avoid the heartbreak of both losing a pet and falling victim to a scam.
No one wants to deal with scams on top of the stress of a missing pet. By staying cautious, asking for proof, and refusing to rush, we can protect ourselves and our beloved animals, even when hope feels thin.
