Spring is here and Houston residents should prepare for the return of mosquito season, which typically begins in March and peaks between April and September. With the warm, humid climate of the Texas Gulf Coast, mosquitoes thrive in our area, bringing not only annoying bites but also serious health risks for humans and pets. Heartworm disease is one of the most significant threats mosquitoes pose to our furry companions. Today, I’m sharing tips for protecting your Houston yard and pets from mosquitoes and heartworms.
Defining Heartworm Disease
This potentially fatal condition affects dogs and cats, regardless of age, sex, or living environment. As the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) explains, heartworms are parasites transmitted through mosquito bites that can cause severe damage to an animal’s heart, lungs, and blood vessels.
The prevalence of heartworm disease is exceptionally high in Houston. According to the Houston Collie Rescue article, approximately one-third of their rescued dogs test positive for heartworms. This alarming statistic underscores the importance of education, prevention, and regular testing and treatment for all pets in our region. Plus, many cat parents are unaware that cats can suffer from heartworm disease, often until their beloved feline receives a diagnosis.
Preventing Mosquitos to Prevent Heartworms
The Harris County Public Health’s Mosquito and Vector Control Division emphasizes the need for residents to take proactive measures to control the mosquito population and prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. For pet owners, this includes protecting themselves and safeguarding their animals against heartworm infection.
We recently shared a few blogs about prepping your yard for spring and summer by removing fallen trees, limbs, and other debris and engaging the services of a pest control company to address infestations, including mosquitoes. We even shared a DIY option from our friends at Bugs Incorporated in Katy here.
Preventing Heartworms with Medication
Sunset Animal Hospital in Houston recommends year-round parasite prevention as a crucial element of pet health care. They advise that symptoms of heartworm infection are not always obvious, making regular testing and preventative measures essential for cats and dogs. In cats, they say, symptoms “are not always noticeable until the heartworms are more fully developed” therefore testing is imperative. Like Sunset Animal Hospital, Katy, Fulshear, and other area vets stress the importance of preventive care in promoting pet health and longevity, especially given our area’s high risk of heartworm disease.
The American Heartworm Society recommends testing pets every 12 months for heartworm. They also encourage preventive medication for cats and dogs year-round. From ivermectin-based oral treatments to topicals with varying ingredients, most heartworm preventatives are very safe for our pets. That said, here are some best practices when using these products:
- Get your pet tested before administering these medications for the first time or after a break
- Opt for products sold by your veterinarian rather than OTC options because your vet will be more familiar with them if there is a reaction or issue
- Follow instructions, keep packages away from pets and children between uses, and wash your hands after dosing
- Ensure the product you’re using is for the species you’re treating – mistakes in medication could be fatal to the wrong species
Protecting Your Houston Yard and Pets From Mosquitoes and Heartworms
As mosquito season approaches, Houston pet owners should consult with their veterinarians about heartworm testing and prevention. By visiting your vet at least once a year, maintaining your yard mosquito-free, and using preventative treatments year-round, we can help ensure your beloved pets remain healthy and happy despite the challenges posed by our local climate and its persistent mosquito population.
Plus, prevention is easier and more cost-effective than treatment if your pet contracts heartworms. With proper care and vigilance, we can keep our pets safe from the threat of heartworm disease – the discomfort of heartworm treatment, which can be very hard on their bodies.
