When Animal Admiration’s Pet Care Experience Stands Out

How Experience Makes a Difference

Last week, we faced our greatest fear in over two decades of pet sitting; a fear that every pet lover shares: losing a beloved companion. Thankfully, everything worked out in the end, but, we believe it’s important to share this experience to highlight the critical role of experienced pet sitters and the importance of comprehensive emergency plans. After all, When Animal Admiration’s pet care experience stands out is when things don’t go as planned.

How Ruby Got Lost

Dog doors can pose dangers.

A cherished member of our extended pet family, Ruby, was missing when we arrived for her visit. She has access to a doggie door, much like many dogs in the Houston area. We believe she panicked during a storm and squeezed between the iron fence out of fear – instead of going back inside. Believe it or not, these reactions are pretty typical of fearful or sensitive dogs. In their panic, they flee the area rather than taking cover in the safety of their home.

How Ruby Was Found

Thankfully, at Animal Admiration, we work as a team. When we realized Ruby was missing, her two sitters, Todd and Jaime, jumped into action. They spent almost two hours searching for her; calling out to her and knocking on doors asking neighbors if they had seen her. We got in touch with her family who simultaneously posted on NextDoor.

Thankfully, Ruby was found safe!

Eventually, Ruby was found under a deck. It took almost 2 additional hours to get her out from under the deck and safely back home. She was unnerved from the ordeal and we didn’t want to force her out, knowing that stressed pets may bite defensively when perceiving a threat.

How We Adjusted To Keep Ruby Safe

Once Ruby was home, we made some adjustments to her care to ensure that she would not go missing again before her family came home. For starters, Ruby will no longer be allowed outdoors unsupervised. We shut her doggie door and shifted her service schedule to accommodate additional visits. Because she can’t let herself out, we’ll visit her more frequently to ensure her needs are met.

What We Learned

Other than the muddy paws, Ruby was in great shape!

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers pets face, even in familiar surroundings. It also highlights the dangers that unsupervised access to the outdoors can pose for pets. In addition to loss, dogs with doggie doors can encounter many unexpected dangers including loss – like Ruby – but also theft, encounters with wild animals, etc.

The experience also underscored the immense value of a professional pet sitting service like ours. At Animal Admiration, we are equipped to handle unexpected crises. Our immediate response was to establish a group chat with our team and Ruby’s family, ensuring open and efficient communication during this stressful time. This rapid collaboration proved invaluable in coordinating search efforts and providing updates.

Pet Care Standards

We are incredibly grateful for Ruby’s safe return! Yet, the experience has profoundly impacted us. It has reinforced our commitment to providing the highest level of care and protection for our clients’ pets. As professional pet sitters and pet parents ourselves, we urge you to take this story to heart in the following ways:

First, choosing a pet sitter is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Experienced professionals who prioritize safety and have well-defined emergency plans are invaluable in protecting your furry family members. We encourage pet owners to thoroughly research potential sitters, inquire about their experience, and discuss their emergency protocols. Second, knowing that there are risks involved in the use of doggie doors is key to keeping pets safe. We cannot tell you how to raise your pup but urge you to take all precautions if you choose to allow your dog into your yard when he or she is unsupervised.
