How to Keep Your Pets Happy While You’re Away

In today’s world there are many of us that simply can’t afford to stay at home, no matter how much we’d love to! Most of us have to work for a living and for many that means working outside the home. For those of us that have pets at home there’s the added worry of keeping them happy and occupied while we are away. From dogs to cats to small mammals to birds it’s easy to find a way to keep them busy.

Dogs: In my personal experience I’d say dogs can be one of the easiest pets to keep entertained simply because of the selection of products out there. The easiest way to keep your dog occupied is to start by finding what motivates them. Do they like toys? Do they like to sleep all day? Are they food motivated? It’s a good idea to have a decent selection of toys for your dog. That being said, you don’t want to have all of the toys out at all times. Rotate them on a daily basis so there’s always something fresh and new for your dog to investigate. If you have an older pet, or perhaps one that just isn’t all that active, sometimes a comfy bed will do the trick. Now, whether that bed is YOUR bed is completely up to you! It can be a little more tricky if your pet is food motivated only because treats are edible. If you want something longer lasting try a bone specially made for dogs (these can be purchased at a variety of retail establishments but make sure to do your research and pick the one that is right for you!). Kong toys are awesome since you can fill them with peanut butter and freeze them enabling the treat to last longer.

Cats: Just like with dogs there is a large assortment of products on the market to keep cats entertained. My top two choices are cat trees/towers and toys. Within each of those categories there is a huge selection. You can get cat trees that stand just a foot or so tall and accommodates one cat all the way up to one that stands 6 feet plus and can accommodate multiple cats. The selection of toys is endless! There are crinkly toys, feather toys, jingle bell toys and more. That being said I found that occasionally an old sock with a crinkled paper ball in it would do the trick as well! You can also find special platforms designed to attach to your window for your cat to be able to watch the world go by out the window. (Please keep your cats’ safety in mind and secure any loose hanging strings, blinds etc when using a window seat or putting a cat tree near a window.)

Small Animals: We can’t forget about the little guys in the bunch! They deserve the same love and attention as their larger counterparts. I always found in a pinch that an empty paper tower roll will keep a small mammal such as a hamster or mouse entertained for hours. You can also find specially made habitats that include mazes of tubes through which they can climb and play. While I don’t have a lot of personal experience with reptiles I know there are options out there for them as well. They may not want to catch a ball like a dog but a nice habitat will go a long way in keeping them happy and entertained. Make sure to provide the proper housing, water, substrate and hide away spots to ensure your reptile stays happy while you’re away. Even a fish will appreciate a good play structure in their tank!

I usually like to remind my readers that all pets are different. Whatever you choose to make your pets happy make sure you do your research because they are all different and in the end only you can make the best choice for your baby.

Welcome

Hello my pet loving friends!

My name is Jaime Standley. I’ve had the pleasure of being friends with Brooke for over 10 years. I’ve been married to my husband for almost 13 years and we have two beautiful sons named John and Matthew. For the past 14 years I called the animal care industry home. I’ve lived in Houston most of my life with an interim stop in Katy for about 14 years. I have an Associates Degree in Science and plan on going back to school to study Marine Biology. When we had our second son in February I made the decision to become a stay at home mom to our boys and it is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Recently, Brooke approached me with the idea to create and maintain a blog for her wonderful pet sitting business, Animal Admiration. In this blog we hope to address many different aspects of pet care, pet health and more.

We will delve into such as issues as:

How to keep your four legged friend happy while your away whether it’s for a few minutes or a full work day

Dog friendly restaurants

Are cats really like potato chips and you can’t have just one?

…..and so much more!

I welcome any and all topic ideas from you, the customer. After all, you and your pet companions are who we do this for!

See you next blog,

Jaime Standley
