Renovations With Pets
Home renovations can be exciting, but they can also be stressful. Add pets to the mix and things can get downright chaotic. It’s essential to plan and manage appropriately. Creating a safe environment for your furry friends and your home improvement project is key. Here are some tips to help you navigate this process. Let’s discuss renovations and pets: a balancing act. These tips apply to work inside and outside your home!
Before Renovations Begin
Communicate with Contractors
Open communication with your contractors is key. Let them know you have pets and discuss potential hazards before the work begins. Some contractors are experienced in working around animals, while others may need extra guidance. Be clear about your pet’s boundaries and any specific concerns you have.
Because language may be a barrier, set expectations with your general contractor to communicate your pets’ presence and location with their workers and subcontractors.
Prioritize Safety
Your pet’s safety should be your top priority. Construction zones are hazardous, with potential dangers like sharp objects, toxic fumes, and loud noises. Create a safe haven for your pet, a room that’s completely off-limits to construction workers. This room should have everything your pet needs, including food, water, bedding, and their favorite toys. Don’t forget a litter box or two for your cat(s!)
Put a sign outside the door that reminds workers not to enter your pet’s safe room. If you have workers that are Spanish-speaking, include the warning in Spanish like we’ve done in the photo to the right.
And, consider investing in a security camera so you can check on your pets throughout the day. Wyze cameras are very affordable. We recommend investing in the microSD card and subscriptions that save footage just in case an issue arises.
Manage Noise and Stress
Construction noise can be overwhelming for pets. Consider investing in a noise machine or Alexa to play white noise or calming music. Studies show that classical music and reggae seem to put dogs at ease. Research is, unfortunately, limited for cats but we imagine they might like white noise better than music.
Also, consider a calming pheromone diffuser. Pheromone diffusers are available at most big box pet supply stores like Petco and Pet Smart. They can be plugged in or sprayed. They usually start to work immediately. CBD and calming treats are always great to have on hand. We love CBD Dog Healths‘ products (they have stuff for cats too!) and WinPro Pet’s Calming formula for dogs.
Regular walks and playtime also help reduce stress in pets. Engage a pet sitter or dog walker before renovations begin and set a regular schedule so that your pets get into a stress-relieving routine from the start of the work.
Consider Temporary Living Arrangements
For extensive renovations, temporary relocation might be necessary. Consider a boarding facility, finding a pet sitter that boards pets in their home, or asking a trusted friend or family member to watch them. If you choose to keep your pet at home, prioritize their quiet space away from the construction.
During Renovations
Keep Them Clean
Construction dust can be harmful to pets. Regularly groom your pet to remove dust and debris. Consider using air purifiers to improve indoor air quality.
Practice Patience and Flexibility
Remember, renovations can be unpredictable. Be patient with your pet and yourself. It might take some time for them to adjust to the new surroundings. Flexibility is essential; be prepared to adapt your plans as needed.
Use Gradual Reintroduction
As renovations are completed, slowly reintroduce your pet to the new spaces. This helps them adjust to the changes and prevents accidents, marking, etc.
Engage a Dog Walker of Pet Sitter
Engage the help of a dog walker or pet sitter to provide much-needed exercise and mental stimulation. When we come over, we can take your dog for a walk, put your cat in their backpack to get them out of the house, or just stay with them in their safe space to provide snuggles and playtime. Especially if you’re at work during renovations, having a dog walker or pet sitter come over while work is being done puts eyes on your beloved pet and can alert you to issues before you get home hours later.
Consult a Veterinarian
If your pet exhibits signs of severe anxiety during the renovation, consult with a veterinarian. They may be able to take some pharmaceuticals to relieve their stress while work is being done. While we don’t always love to see pets on anti-anxiety medications longterm, these medications can be lifesavers in the short-term.
By following the above tips, you can minimize stress for both you and your pet during home renovations. With careful planning, preparation, and the help of a dog walker or pet sitter, you can successfully navigate this challenging period and create a happy home for everyone involved!
