Litter Box Basics for Cat Parents
When it comes to providing the best litter box experience for your cat, several factors need to be considered, including the number of boxes, size, type, and litter used. Today, I’m sharing a comprehensive overview based on my expert recommendations. After decades as a professional pet sitter, I know a thing or two about what cats like and how we can prevent litter box issues before they start. Let’s discuss litter box basics for cat parents – from a pet sitter’s perspective.
How Many Litter Boxes Does Each Cat Need?
The general rule of thumb is to have one litter box for each cat, plus one extra. For example, if you have two cats, you should have at least three litter boxes. This guideline helps prevent territorial disputes among cats and ensures that each cat has access to a clean box when needed.
Where Should Litter Boxes Go?
In multi-level homes, place a litter box on each floor to accommodate your cat’s needs without requiring them to navigate stairs frequently.
Also, avoid noisy spots like laundry rooms and bathrooms because cats cannot relax when there is noise or over-stimulating odors nearby. In addition, avoid placing litter boxes in small closets because small spaces can make cats feel like they are cornered and can amplify yucky smells, which is not ideal for our kitty friends who are naturally very clean and tidy.
What Type of Litter Box is Best?
While as humans we prefer the attractive litter boxes that prevent smells from lingering in our home, the priority should always be the cat’s comfort. Because litter box time is a vulnerable time for a cat, they prefer to have an uncovered box with multiple escape routes. They want to feel at ease while doing their business which is why most cats prefer open litter boxes – covered litter boxes can feel cramped and smell stinky.
What Size Litter Box is Best?
The size of the litter box is crucial for your cat’s comfort. A good rule is that the box should be 1.5 times the length of your cat from nose to tail base. This allows enough space for your cat to enter, turn around, scratch, and eliminate comfortably.
Minimum Dimensions for a Litter Box
– Length: Approximately 23 inches or more (depending on the cat)
– Width: At least 13-15 inches
Many experts suggest using large plastic storage bins as an alternative to commercial boxes because they can provide ample space and prevent litter spillage.
What Type of Litter is Best?
Choosing the right type of litter is essential for both your cat’s preference and health:
Preferred Litter Types
Most cats favor soft, unscented clumping litters, which are easier for owners to clean and do not irritate sensitive noses or paws.
Litter Types to Avoid
Scented litters or those with strong fragrances can be off-putting and may even cause respiratory issues in cats and humans. Additionally, avoid liners as many cats dislike them due to noise and texture, especially if your cat has experienced paw injuries like declawing procedures.
How Should You Maintain A Litter Box?
To ensure your cat uses the litter box consistently, follow these best practices:
- Scoop out waste at least once a day.
- Depending on usage, regularly dispose of the litter completely and use fresh litter to replace it. If odors are present, you need to increase the frequency of your litter changes.
- Clean the box with soap and hot water every 1-4 weeks, avoiding harsh chemicals and fragrances that can deter your cat from using it.
By following these guidelines regarding the number, size, and type of litter boxes, you can create a comfortable and inviting environment for your feline friends.
